What Is Hospice Care?
Hospice care, or palliative care, is a type of healthcare for individuals with a terminal illness. Hospice is for those with an incurable disease or condition who opt to forgo medical treatment. Many people enroll in hospice care when recovery is unlikely or their illness has become too difficult to manage.
Individuals with a severe condition or illness with a high risk of death generally choose hospice care. Physicians recommend this option when a severe illness negatively affects an individual’s quality of life or when they cannot function on their own. Some examples of common diseases and conditions that may result in hospice care are:
- Dementia
- Heart failure
- Cancer
- Chronic obstructive lung disease
Hospice aims to treat the individual and their symptoms rather than the illness. It helps to improve the quality of life but does not take any measures to delay death. Instead, it aids in providing maximum comfort and care towards the end of life. Hospice care aims to manage patients’ pain and other symptoms to make them feel at ease.
Determining if or when a person should receive end-of-life care can be an overwhelming decision. At Sutton Gardens, we have a trusted, dedicated hospice team. We devote our time to providing comfort and understanding to our patients and family members.
The Benefits of Hospice Care
Hospice care has many benefits for the individual experiencing illness as well as their family and friends. For example, family members may face extreme pressure and difficulty giving adequate care to their sick loved ones. In addition, many people feel overwhelmed and have difficulty coping when confronting these situations and decisions.
Sutton Gardens hospice program provides support and resources to help family members during their loved one’s illness and grieving process. Besides counseling your loved ones, hospice generally offers better pain and symptom care. As a result, the individual does not have to endure unnecessary tests or take unneeded medication.
Another benefit of hospice care is the access to our knowledgeable staff that will help you create a detailed plan customized to the terminally ill patient. Having a plan is beneficial not only to the sick individual but also to their family. It states the person’s wishes and can be a comfort, reassuring them they will receive attentive treatment.

Costs and Insurance Coverage
Costs for hospice care can vary widely depending on the type of program you choose. Generally, private insurance companies along with most Medicare and Medicaid plans will cover part of the cost.
Older individuals who are Medicare covered are eligible to enroll in hospice care if a doctor confirms they have six months or less to live. The person with the terminal illness will most likely have to sign a statement. This statement confirms their wish for hospice care rather than receive active treatment.
For any questions or concerns about insurance coverage or the costs of hospice, contact the staff at Sutton Gardens. We will be happy to review our hospice programs and discuss payment options.
